In keeping with the pledge Marxist icon Jyoti Basu had made six
years ago, his body was handed over to the authorities of a city
hospital today for the benefit of anatomy students.
After Armymen sounded last post and gave
the leader the 21-gun salute, a huge crowd that gathered at the
venue, Mohar Kunj, witnessed a rare moment.
It was in accordance with the earlier
announcement that CPI(M) state committee Secretary Biman Basu
declared that Basu's body was being handed over to S S K M Hospital
Three representatives of the state-run
hospital were present to take charge of the mortal remains of Basu
which will be preserved in the anatomy department.

The CPI(M) patriarch had pledged his body
in 2004 in keeping with the practice of some of his party colleagues
who predeceased him and joining the list of luminary donors in the
