Sri Lanka war report presented to parliament

Friday December 16, 2011 07:54:50 PM, IANS

Colombo: A report on the three-decade-long ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka was Friday presented to parliament, making it a public document, an official said.

Leader of the House Nimal Siripala de Silva, on behalf of the government, presented the 400-page report prepared by the eight-member Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission, Xinhua reported.

The commission had collected information by way of petitions, interviews and discussion over a period of two years.

The report was earlier handed over to President Mahinda Rajapaksa Nov 20.

The UN and a number of countries including India, the US, Britain and Japan had stressed the need to release the report soon.

The government has promised to undertake investigations recommended by the commission.

The commission began its sessions in August 2010 and recorded thousands of oral and written submissions on the period 2002-2009. The report was completed this November.

According to BBC, around 100,000 people died in 26 years as government forces battled the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) fighting for a separate homeland.
