Malegaon: Violent mob ransacked a local school damaging furniture and burnt police vehicles after a 05-year-old girl student was allegedly sexually assaulted by a sweeper at about 11:00 in the morning Friday, local police said.
The incident took place inside the campus of Mother Aisha Urdu Medium School in Aisha Nagar area of the city, according to Inspector Gavit of Ramzanpura Police Station.
"We are yet to identify the accused who was working on daily wages in the same school", Gavit said adding that the victim is safe.
"The angy mob has damaged police vehicles and school furniture. We are trying to bring the situation under control", he said.
He said at least six police vehicles including two four-wheelers have been damaged by the unruly mob.
Violence broke out in the area at about 11:00 am in the morning but continued till 06:45 pm, with the violent mob throwing out school furniture in the playground and setting them afire.
Smoke could be seen coming out of the two school buildings all through the day. There are also reports that some teachers are also attacked, and school records and computers are also destroyed and burnt by the violent mob.
Eyewitnesses said the police reached the venue soon after violence broke out. But, they deserted the place after heavy stone pelting and camped near the old Mumbai-Agra road - some 500 mtrs away from the school.
"Since today was Friday - a holiday, the mob just went on multiplying", Inspector Gavit said.
At around 06:00 pm, former Mayor Abdul Malik reached the spot, pacified the mob and cleared the school campus from th violent mob. He then called fire tenders and police who took control of the situation.
There are various versions taking round in the city about the immediate cause of the violence, with some even denying the sexual assault. A resident, who is living in front of the school while talking to ummid.com said, complaints against the accused have been made to the school management after similar incidents in the past.
"This is not the first incident of its kind. There were complaints against the accused in the past. But, the school management did not take any action despite warnings", he said on condition of anonymity.
A teacher who resides nearby however said that the incident had taken place four days before and the school management had sacked the sweeper from his job.
"Someone in the school noticing that toilets are filthy called him today morning, unware of the fact that he has been sacked by the school management. Violence broke out when the accused was seen in the premises today morning", he said.
The school management is in a state of shock and could not be contacted.
Meanwhile, the police has rejected the rumours taking round on social media and has appealed for calm and peace.
