30 children die due to encephalitis in last 48 hours in CM Adityanath's constituency

As many as 30 children have died due to encephalitis in a span of just 48 hours at Baba Raghav Das Medical College Hospital in Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's constituency Gorakhpur.

"About 30 children have lost their lives due to encephalitis in last 48 hours on Friday at Gorakhpur's BRD Hospital," District Magistrate Rajeev Rautela said. Seven children died reportedly today only, according to news agency ANI.

Encephalitis is a sudden onset inflammation of the brain.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s Lok Sabha constituency of Gorakhpur has seen at least 114 deaths due to Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) this year alone.

AES is an umbrella classification under which comes the diseases Japanese Encephalitis (JE), water-borne encephalitis and scrub typhus, among others. As an MP, Yogi Adityanath had actively raised the issue, according to Indian Express.

The hospital has a special ward for patients of encephalitis. The children who died were admitted in three wards at the hospital.

The incident comes barely two days after Yogi Adityanath's visit to the hospital to review its functioning.
