New Delhi: Delhi Police on Monday filed a chargesheet in Sunanda Pushkar suicide case and named senior Congress leader and former union minister Shashi Tharoor as accused. Sunanda Pushkar was married to Tharoor when she committed suicide in a Delhi hotel.

While accusing Tharoor of abetting the suicide of Sunanda Pushkar the Delhi Police told a city court that he should be summoned as an accused in the case. Pushkar was found dead in a luxury hotel room on the night of January 17, 2014. Police said there was sufficient evidence against him.

The charge sheet, which includes several annexures including medical reports, said that Pushkar died within four years of her marriage with Tharoor. The couple had entered the wedlock on August 22, 2010.

Responding to the charges made against him by the Delhi Police Tharoor in a series of tweet said that he has taken note of "the filing of this preposterous charge sheet" and intends to contest it.

"I have taken note of the filing of this preposterous chargesheet and intend to contest it vigorously. No one who knew Sunanda believes she would ever have committed suicide, let alone abetment on my part. If this is conclusion arrived at after 4+ yrs of investigation... It does not speak well of the methods or motivations of the Delhi Police", Tharoor tweeted

"In October 17, the Law Officer made a statement in the Delhi High Court that they have not found anything against anyone and now in 6 months they say that I have abetted a suicide. Unbelievable," he added.

Meanwhile, the Congress Party too has come out openly in Tahroor's support calling the charges as politically motivated. "The Congress Party stands by Dr Tharoor and denounces this politically motivated charge sheet against him", the party said.
