India on Pakistani Military Action

New Delhi: Responding to Pakistan's claim that it has shot down two Indian Air Force (IAF) jets and captured two pilots, India said that the Pakistani jets today morning violated its airspace but they were immediately thwarted back. In the aerial engagement that followed one Pakistani fighter jet was shot down and India lost one jet whereas a pilot is missing.

"India had informed about Counter Terrorism (CT) action it took yesterday against a training camp of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) in Pakistan based on credible evidence that JeM intended to launch more attacks. Against this Counter Terrorism Action, Pakistan has responded this morning by using its Air Force to target military installations on the Indian side. Due to our high state of readiness and alertness, Pakistan’s attempts were foiled successfully", Raveesh Kumar, Official Spokesperson, Ministry of External Affairs, India said.

"The Pakistan Air Force was detected and the Indian Air Force responded instantly. In that aerial engagement, one Pakistan Air Force fighter aircraft was shot down by a MiG 21 Bison of the Indian Air Force", he added.

"The Pakistani aircraft was seen by ground forces falling from the sky on the Pakistan side. In this engagement, we have unfortunately lost one MiG 21. The pilot is missing in action. Pakistan has claimed that he is in their custody. We are ascertaining the facts", he said.

The statement came soon after Pakistan said it undertook strikes across the LoC from Pakistani airspace.

"Sole purpose of this action was to demonstrate our right, will and capability for self defence. We do not wish to escalate but are fully prepared if forced into that paradigm," said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA).

Later, Pakistan also released a video, claiming it is of IAF fighter pilot in custody.

In the video, a blindfolded man says he is Wing Commander Abhinandan and a pilot. He also says his service number is 27981, and asks if he is with the Pakistan Army.
