Azharuddin to join TRS

Hyderabad: Former Captain of the Indian Cricket Team, Mohammad Azharuddin, who began his political innings with Congress has decided to join the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS), according to media reports.

Mohammad Azharuddin was made the working president of Telangana Congress few weeks before the 2018 Telangana Assembly elections. The report has shocked the Congress which is yet to come out of the humiliating defeat it suffered in the recently concluded state elections.

What's more shocking for the Congress is that Mohammad Azharuddin made his mind to leave Congress and join TRS after his meeting with TRS Founder and Chief Minister of Telangana K. Chandrasekhar Rao at the wedding reception of Asaduddin Owaisi's daughter. Congress claims to fight BJP, but considers Asaduddin Owaisi and his AIMIM as it's enemy number 1.

Mohammad Azharuddin and Asaduddin Owaisi are freinds since their days at Nizam College, Osmania University in Hyderabad. Owaisi's AIMIM and TRS are allies in Telangana.

Sources said Congress had planned to project Mohammad Azharuddin in a big way during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. There were also the reports that the party wanted Azharuddin to contest the election against AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi from Hyderabad City.

However, looking at the strong bond Owaisi has with the voters in his constituency, Azharuddin realized that it would be difficult to unseat the latter from the seat he holds since 1984. He was also of the feeling that he is being made a scapegoat, sources said.

Party sources said after Azharuddin's reluctance to contest against Owaisi, Congress high command decided to field him from the Malkajgiri Lok Sabha constituency. But, Azharuddin's latest googley has spoiled the Congress' 2019 game.

Meanwhile, a former Congress leader who recently joined TRS confirmed that Azharuddin will not only join the party but also contest the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Secunderabad parliamentary seat as TRS candidate.
