London: Pro-Palestinian activists led by Palestine Action and Shut the System Monday targeted at least 20 branches of Barclays accusing the British multinational universal bank of funding genocide of Palestinians at the hands of the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF).
Videos shared on different social platforms showed the pro-Palestine activists smashing windows and throwing red paint over the bank branches in London, Bristol and Manchester.
Palestine Action confirmed its activists smashed the windows of the bank in Broadmead, along with Barclays branches right across the country, from Glasgow to Brighton.
Palestine Action and Shut the System target 20 Barclays branches across England and Scotland", the group said in a social media post.
"Our collaboration demanding divestment from Israel’s weapons trade and fossil fuels has left the bank shattered", it wrote in the post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The group defended its action saying what its activists did today was nothing compared to the devastation seen in Gaza.
"Barclays ask for campaigners to “respect their property”. When will the bank stop funding genocide and respect Palestinian lives, homes, schools, hospitals, universities and land?"
"Their bank is worthless in comparison to one Palestinian life", Palestine Action said in anther post on X.
Sharing the videos, Shut the System in separate social media posts linked the targeting of Barclays branches with 'genocidal financing' and funding of the Israeli military companies:
"Barclays provided $190.5 billion to fossil fuel companies between 2016 to 2022. Their recent ‘commitments’ to phase out direct financing of fossil fuel companies are way off what’s needed. The world can’t wait to End Fossil Fuels so we must shut the system."
"For the sake of all life on Earth we must shut the system. Splintered windows, shards of broken glass glittering on the pavements stand as testimony to the shattered hopes for a liveable future for all beings, everywhere", it said.
In another post, Shut the System clearly mentioned 'genocidal financing' and directly named Israel and its financial link with Barclays.
"Elbit systems is Israel’s largest military company. The unfolding genocide in Gaza is clear reason to boycott the state yet Barclays continue to invest in its military industry, all in the name of profit", it wrote on X.
"Shut The System and Palestine Action have taken radical direct action in frustration with Barclay’s paltry progress on changing their climate destroying and genocidal financing", it added.
Israeli Occupation Forces with tacit support by the United States and its allies including UK have killed more than 36,000 Palestinians in Gaza since Oct 7, 2023. Of them more than 15,000 are children and an overwhelming number is also of women.

The Israeli forces have also razed to ground close to 50% of Gaza infrastructure including hospitals, schools, colleges, mosques and churches.
The Israeli forces have destroyed at least 12 universities in Gaza and have killed close to 100 Palestinian scholars, scientists, academicians and education experts, according to Gaza Health Ministry.
