Riyadh/Dubai: Eid Al Fitr, the first day of Shawwal - the month which follows the holy month of Ramadan will be celebrated in Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states tomorrow on Thursday, August 08, 2013, it is announced after the new moon was sighted today.
Oman, however, has announced the first day of Eid Al Fitr will be Friday, August 9.
"Upon testimonies of a number of adult witnesses who confirmed to have seen the new moon of Shawal after sunset this evening, the Supreme Court of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia announced, following an extraordinary session to consider whether there are reports on sighting the new moon of Shawal, that tomorrow Thursday is blessed Eid Al-Fitr 1434 H", the Royal Court said in a statement.
The statement said the Supreme Court has informed the Royal Court that the measure was taken as per the tradition and instructions of Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) who conditioned fasting and breakfasting on seeing the moon by mere eyes.
"Thursday will be the first day of Eid Al Fitr, as Wednesday was the last day of Ramadan", the UAE Moon Sighting Committee has announced.
"After a number of legitimate measures, as well as several contacts with neighbouring countries, it was established that Wednesday was the last day of Ramadan, and Thursday is the first day of Shawwal, marking the first day of Eid Al Fitr in the UAE", Gulf News quoted the committee, headed by Dr. Hadef Jua'an Al Daheri, Minister of Justice as stating.
In India, Kerala announced to celebrate Eid tomorrow. In other parts of India, tomorrow being 29th of Ramadan, the Edi Al Fitr day will be decided after sighting of the moon. Various moon and hilal committees have appealed to the people in India to report the moon sighting.
Muslims follow lunar calendar and the first day of the new month is decided based on moon sighting on 29th of the preceding month. If the moon is not sighted, 30 days are completed.
