Wednesday August 14, 2013 8:40 PM, IANS

At least 95 people were killed and around 900 injured across Egypt Wednesday, as police conducted a dispersal operation against supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi. The presidency announced a state of emergency across the nation for one month.

"A total of 23 people were killed and 447 injured in Cairo's Rabaa al-Adawiya Square in Nasr City, Moustafa Mahmoud Square in Mohandseen districts, and Nahda Square in Giza," health Ministry spokesperson Mohamed Fatah-Allah told Xinhua.

Elsewhere, 37 people were killed and 427 injured in Alexandria, Suez, Beheira, Minya, Sohag, Daqahliya and Asyut governorates, he added.

However, Ahmed Aaref, spokesman of the Muslim Brotherhood, to which Morsi is affiliated, told Xinhua that around 180 protestors were killed and over 7,000 injured.

The Egyptian presidency announced a state of emergency nationwide for one month, state TV reported.

The presidency said that imposing emergency was due to the ongoing danger and deliberate sabotage acts by some extremist groups.
