Lucknow: The Samajwadi Party government in Uttar Pradesh Monday denied permission to the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) for a yatra of saints which it planed through UP beginning August 25 to reinvigorate its campaign for the construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya.
"Allowing the yatra would have violated the Supreme Court orders," said UP principal secretary (home) R M Srivastava.
Through the tour, the VHP had planned to reinvigorate its campaign for the construction of a Ram temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya, where the 16th century Babri mosque was razed by Hindu extremists on December 06, 1992.
The demolition was followed by a series of communal riots in various states of India including Mumbai, the country's commercial hub.
The Babri Masjid dispute case is pending in the Supreme Court.
