When IIT-Kharagpur robots will play soccer
Monday August 26, 2013 8:25 AM, IANS

Armed with high speed metal dribblers and kickers, a clutch of small autonomous robots engineered by a group of students, at the Indian Institute of Technology-Kharagpur (IIT-KGP), are set to play soccer at an international event in Malaysia.

Members of the IIT-Kharagpur Robo Soccer Student Group (KRSSG) are gearing up to participate in the FIRA (Federation of International Robot-soccer Association) Roboworld Cup and Congress 2013 at Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, scheduled Aug 24 to 29.

"We had participated in FIRA in 2010 but we didn't win. But we learnt a lot. We have worked hard this time and we hope to get a position," said one of KRSSG's members.

KRSSG comprises a team of students who engineer autonomous mobile robots (autobots) for playing robo soccer and participate in international events.

The USP of autobots lies in their ability to function without continuous human interference.

The autobots from IIT-KGP will participate in the Micro-Robot World Soccer Tournament (MiroSot) and the SimuroSot events (3D technology based simulation form).

Since its inception in 1996, FIRA annual world cup has been hosted in countries like Australia, Brazil, China, France, and India.

Experts in robotics across the globe gather at the world cup to participate in gala robotic sporting events like football, weightlifting, running and marathon.
