India-born author Manil Suri wins literary award in Britain
Wednesday December 4, 2013 9:42 PM, IANS

India-born author Manil Suri has won this year's Bad Sex in Fiction Award by Britain's Literary Review magazine for his book "The City of Devi".

The prize was presented by British actress, author and columnist Joan Collins Dec 3 in London.

Suri, who lives in US and works as a professor of mathematics at the University of Maryland, was, however, unable to accept the prize in person, said a press release issued by the magazine Wednesday.

"The City of Devi" is the third novel by the author. His other two novels are "The Death of Vishnu" and "The Age of Shiva".

The story revolves around three characters -- Sarita, her physicist husband Karun, who has disappeared, and Jaz, a young gay Muslim.

The judges were won over by the climax of an extended sex scene involving all three characters.

Suri has been longlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2001 and shortlisted for the Pen/Faulkner Award.

He won the Barnes & Noble Discover Prize in 2002.

The annual award was introduced by the magazine in 1993.
