Cancer forces Indian family in UAE into dire straits
Thursday July 18, 2013 8:22 PM, IANS

An Indian family in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is desperately looking for funds for the treatment of a young man suffering from a rare form of cancer.

Farhan Hussain, 24, is suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, a cancer of the white blood cells, and is admitted to the Dubai Hospital where he has run up medical bills totalling 140,000 dirhams ($38,115).

His father, Abrar Hussain Sheikh, a 58-year-old retired bus driver, is doing odd jobs as a mechanic to make ends meet for the family, the Khaleej Times reported Thursday.

Farhan has to undergo six more chemotherapy sessions before he can be taken to a specialist facility either in India or Turkey for bone marrow transplant.

"Before all these problems started, I was a self-sustained man," Abrar was quoted as saying.

"I never had to spread my hands and ask for money from anyone. For more than 40 years we have lived a life of dignity and happiness. These are testing times for us and I hope Allah will show us a way out of our misery," the distressed man said.

With six mouths to feed and an elder son also without a job, Abrar sees his problems never ending.

His wife also had to go to India for treatment due to a thyroid complication.

However, Abrar is grateful to the hospital for taking care of Farhan.

"The hospital has been very supportive in treating Farhan and the chemotherapy sessions will continue for a few more months," he said.

"We hope to raise funds and pay the bills by the end of his treatment."

Meanwhile, the family has started approaching charity organisations in the UAE and also hoping for help from individuals as well.
