Mumbai: The Avami Vikas Party floated by former Assistant Commissioner of Police Shamsher Khan Pathan on Tuesday demanded 15 per cent reservation for the backward class Muslim community.
He also threatened to launch an agitation on August 10, if necessary amendments are not carried out in the presidential order passed on August 10, 1950 which had deprived reservation to backward class Muslims.
Addressing a press conference he said that on August 10, 1950, the then President Dr Rajendra Praad had passed an order saying that persons not following Hindu religion were not entitled to reservation.
"This was something which was contrary to the Constitution as our constitution does not allow the reservation on the basis of religion. Recently Juscice Sachar report also recommended reservation for poor Muslims and held that status of Muslims in eduction and other fields are worst than Dalits."
He added that in 1956 the Presidential order was amended and Dalit Sikhs were included in the list of SCs and STs. like that it was also amended in 1990 when , neo-Buddhists were given reservation.
"If it can be amended twice why it can not be amended a third time for giving reservation to the backward Muslims?", he asked.
"We are not asking reservation for all Muslims, but for the backward class Muslims. If necessary amendments are not made, on August 10, we would observe Black Day," he added.
He further said that in this regard his party had wrote a letter to the President requesting him to amend the order or set aide 1950 order and pass a fresh order to enable reservation for backward class Muslim.
