Prime Minister visits Muzaffarnagar, calls for punishing guilty

The "guilty should be punished", Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Monday during a visit to violence-hit Muzaffarnagar district in Uttar Pradesh, along with Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and party vice president Rahul Gandhi.

"It was a very tragic incident and those guilty should be punished," Manmohan Singh told reporters here.

The leaders met people affected in violence and ensured all help to the state government to restore normalcy in the district.

Manmohan Singh said: "Our priority will be that people displaced (in clashes) feel secure and arrangements be made for their safety till they not return home."

As many as 48 people were killed in the riots that ravaged the western town of Muzaffarnagar for three days. More than 43,000 people have been displaced when violence broke out Sep 7 and are currently taking shelter in 38 relief camps.
