Lucknow: Arrest warrants were issued on Wednesday against six Uttar Pradesh politicians, who are accused of inciting violence in Muzaffarnagar, press reports have said.
The list includes politicians from the Hindu communal party BJP, and the BSP who addressed meetings that led to violence in the district.
BSP MLA Noor Salim Rana, who is one of the accused politicians, denied that he instigated the mob and said he is ready to face investigations.
"I am ready to go to jail if I am proved guilty after probe," he said.
Another accused MLA from the BJP Sangeet Som has also denied the charges leveled by the cops.
"I was not hiding, I was in my constituency," Som said in an interview.
As many as 47 people have been killed, over 100 injured and more than 43,000 rendered homeless in the communal clashes that singed the area since September 7. The Army was called in to contain the situation.
Meanwhile, leaders of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), which is a constituent partner in India's ruling alliance, visited camps of riot victims in Tawli and Kantala in Muzaffarnagar. They included India's Minister of State for External Affairs and President of IUML E. Ahamed, and IUML national Secretary and member of Parliament E.T. Muhammad Basheer.
They assured to the victims that they would pressurize on central and state governments to take stringent action against the culprits.
They will meet Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday in Lucknow. Ahamed earlier met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and voiced anxiety over the incident.
