"We are fully ready for any kind of inquiry the government wants to initiate against the Jamiat-e-Ulema. But, it should also initiate similar probe against the RSS and other Hindutva outfits to cheque their sources of funding", Jamiat-e-Ulema Maharashtra Gen Secretary Haleemulah Qasmi said while talking to the media.

"The Jamiat-e-Ulema leaders had given Gandhi Ji the title of 'Mahatma'. But, the Jamiat is accused of promoting terrorism whereas those who killed the Father of the Nation are being eulogised like national heroes", he said adding that the sacrifices made by the Jamiat-e-Ulema for the country are unmatchable.

Qasmi was reacting to the allegations levelled by Mumbai BJP president and MLA Ashish Shelar in the Maharashtra assembly against the Jamiat-e-Ulema. While stating that the Jamiat-e-Ulema is promoting terrorism by providing legal aid to those arrested in terror cases, Shelar had demanded an inquiry into the funding of the Jamiat. Shelar had also demanded a ban on the Jamiat if necessary.

Shelar's allegations made in the Maharashtra assembly were protested by the opposition MLAs especially those belonging to the Congress, Samajwadi Party (SP) an the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM).

Raising a point of order, MIM MLA from Mumbai Waris Pathan even demanded the removal of Shelar's statement from the proceedings of the house.

Chief Minister Fadnavis however defended his party MLA and also favored an inquiry against the Jamiat-e-Ulema.

The Jamiat-e-Ulema is a 95-year-old organisation of Muslims in India. It started its legal aid wing in 2007 after a spate of arrests of Muslim youth in 2006 in Maharashtra. It is is presently fighting 56 terror cases in which 410 Muslims are under arrest. It funds local lawyers as well as noted lawyers like K T Tulsi, Kamini Jaiswal and Shanti Bhushan to fight on behalf of the accused.

The Jamiat legal cell has also provided legal aid to some non-Muslims who were wrongly framed in various cases.

Besides providing legal aid to accused it believes are implicated in wrong cases, the Jamiat is also engaged in relief work after natural calamities. It also gives education scholarships to the poor and needy. The Jamiat claims about 30% of its education scholarships goes to non-Muslims.
