Sunday July 20, 2014 12:35 PM, Agencies

Setting an example and in a touching gesture, the Muslim Converts' Association of Singapore has donated more than $170,000 in aid to needy families. The donations were distributed to the families Sunday morning.

Darul Arqam

Also known as Darul Arqam Singapore, the association gave 562 families $265 in cash and $40 in NTUC vouchers each to help them during the fasting month. In all, $171,410 was doled out, reported the Straits Time.

Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs, presented the money to some families at the event.

Last year, the association gave out $194,250 to 555 families.

Besides this annual disbursement during the fasting month of Ramadan, the association also provides short-term monthly assistance to selected families that face financial difficulties.

According to the association's website, it is dedicated to deliver educational opportunities with lectures, courses, and other activities that depict Islam in discussion, behaviour and spirit.

Its friendly programmes and harmonious events involve social gatherings in celebration of Islamic events, dissemination of books and magazines to build Islamic awareness, and assistance for the community through counselling, financial aids, and other welfare services.

The association was established in 1980. Since August 2005, Darul Arqam Singapore has been appointed as the One-Stop Centre for Converts (OSCC) by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS).

It continues to facilitate the issuance of Conversion Card and reimbursements of transport claims, circumcision fees, and the fees incurred by Converts when they insert their Muslim names in their identity card.
