As BJP's Fadnavis sworn-in as CM, Malegaon punished for voting to Congress
You all support and vote Congress, why do you want to watch the swearing-in ceremony of BJP Chief Minister, electricity department says and cuts power
Saturday November 1, 2014 10:40 PM, ummid.com Staff Reporter

As thousands of people in Malegaon joined fellow citizens in Maharashtra to watch the live telecast of the swearing-in ceremony of Bhartiya Janata Party's (BJP) first Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis Friday, the local electricity department cuts the power exactly at the time when the ceremony was at its peak and people were glued to their television screens.

Load Shedding

Worst, when contacted, the local electricity department said as they were all supporters of the Congress party, they should not have any interest in the swearing-in ceremony of BJP Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

"We were all glued to our TV screens Friday watching live the swearing-in ceremony of Chief Minister Fadnavis and other ministers of the BJP government when suddenly electricity went off. When we requested the electricity department to restore electricity they said Tum log to Congress wale ho.. Congress hi ko vote dete ho… BJP Mukhya Mantri ki shapath se kya lena dena? (You all are supporters of the Congress party. Your vote is only for the Congress. You should have nothing to do with the swearing-ceremony of the BJP Chief Minister)", a consumer, who did not want to be named, said while talking to ummid.com.

Malegaon is subjected to daily power cuts of 8-10 hours every day ever since the results of the 2014 Maharashtra assembly elections were out. Friday, however, the situation was at its worst. Electricity went off in the city on Friday in the morning at 06:00 a.m., resumed at 09:20 a.m. but went off again at 11:35 a.m., restored at 02:15 p.m. and went off after few hours to be restored at 08:20 p.m. only to be cut off again at 09:35 p.m. It resumed at 11:35 p.m. – a little before mid-night.

When ummid.com contacted the electricity department to know the cause of the power cuts, it said they were becuase of the repair work on a breakdown call. On daily load-shedding, the department said it is done on the order of higher authorities.

Malegaon was in focus in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and in the recently concluded assembly election, when it voted in favour of the Congress party candidates even as in other constituencies support for the party considerably declined.

Though the Congress candidate Amrish Patel lost the Lok Sabha election to BJP's Dr. Subhash Bhamre, he got about 90% of the total polled votes in Malegaon (Central) assembly constituency – in total contrast to other five constituencies.

In the state assembly elections too, BJP won many seats in the Nashik and Dhule districts, but Malegaon (Central) assembly constituency again voted for the Congress party, this time for Asif Shaikh Rasheed.

The prolonged power-cuts, especially immediately after the election results, in the city whose economy depends on the powerlooms have shocked the weavers. They wonder if the new government will take care of the matter on urgent basis, or as the electricity department said, they will indeed be punished for supporting the Congress party.
