[The Musical Play ANNIE was witnessed live at the Oberoi International School (OIS) on December 04, 2015 from 5.30 PM onwards. ]

The students of Oberoi International School (OIS) stepped into the rags to riches story of a sprightly, plucky orphan Annie with the Broadway comedy-drama ‘ANNIE’, which was presented in the school auditorium on Friday.

The musical’s characters that range from abandoned children to a powerful, self-assured billionaire, from a cruel matron to a maternal and classy private secretary were portrayed with remarkable ease by the enthusiastic cast. This enthusiasm was matched by the crew who took up roles as set painters, prop makers, lighting designers, backstage and stage managers, and student photographers.

The song ‘You’re never fully dressed without a smile’ had the audience humming along while the deft footwork in the song ‘I don’t need anything but you’ captivated the audience. A regular feature of the OIS musicals is that they do not depend upon playback; instead every performer sings to the accompaniment of live musicians.

Annie, the theatrical enactment flavored with music and dance is set in 1930s New York during ‘The Great Depression’. Brave young Annie is forced to live a life of misery and torment at Miss Hannigan’s orphanage. She is determined to find her real parents and her luck changes when she is chosen to spend Christmas at the residence of famous billionaire Oliver Warbucks.

The shows scheduled for three days have been sold out already because they guarantee to put a song in the heart and a smile on the face of the audience. The show was fully organised by the students.

"We must remember that in a school production of this nature, the experience of the students' participation is more important than that of the audience. There are almost 100 students performing in Annie, and a whole host of other students working backstage, operating the lights, helping with makeup and costumes. Some of them are taking on such leadership roles as stage manager for the very first time", Neil McWilliam, Head of School, OIS said.

"All of these students, working together as a team, all doing their very best to produce something exceptional which brings joy to the audience - this is learning at its best. And all of the teachers who have worked so hard after school and during weekends to make this possible for the students - this is teaching at its best", Neil added.

“Crazy, fun, awesome and extremely tiring!!! Yes, that was literally Annie in few words. It was an enriching journey, right from the auditions including the songs and the costumes. We have learnt so much; confidence, collaboration and execution. It was superbly exciting to discover Annie. This musical was the best ever", Disha Sikaria (grade 8), who is a part of the cast, said.

The Oberoi International School (OIS) conducts its annual musical show with an intention to broaden the theatrical education of the secondary students, to develop and nurture talent both on and off stage and to celebrate their talent and dedication.

Musicals are multi-faceted and help the students express emotions, build social skills and develop awareness. Adopting such world renowned musical shows, makes it easy for students to grasp right from grade 6 various attributes of theatre i.e. how to express emotions, build social skills, develop rhythmic art, body and spatial awareness.
