Shazia Ilmi, one of the founder members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), is likely to join the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and contest the election as its candidate against AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal in the February 07 Delhi elections, sources said.

Ilmi had unsuccessfully contested the 2013 Delhi polls. The ex-AAP leader had lost the RK Puram seat to Anil Sharma of the BJP by a slender margin of 326 votes. Later on she resigned from AAP, saying there was lack of democracy within the party.

Ilmi also lost the General Elections from Ghaziabad constituency. She contested against former Army chief General VK Singh and even lost her security deposit.

Delhi will go to the polls February 7 and the vote count will take place February 10, the Election Commission announced Monday.

Election Commissioner V.S. Sampath said the last date for nomination of candidates will be Jan 21 and they could withdraw from the contest by Jan 24.

Major political parties in Delhi have already started preparing for the assembly polls.

Delhi elected a hung assembly in December 2013 after which the Aam Aadmi Party formed a minority government headed by Arvind Kejriwal with Congress backing. Kejriwal resigned Feb 14, 2014.
