UPSC 2014 results: 04 Muslims in top 100, pass pc highest in a decade

The Union Public Service Commission Saturday declared the results of the Civil Service Examination 2014, naming 1,236 successful candidates inclduing 38 Muslims who had cleared the prestigious examination to join premier civil services including the Indian Administrative Service.

The UPSC Main exam was held in December 2014 and the personal interviews were conducted in April-June 2015.

Of the top five candidates, four are women - Ira Sehgal (1), Renu Raj (2), Nishi Gupta (3) and Vandana Rao (4). The 5th rank holder is Suharsha Bhagat.

Among the top hundred successful candidates are four Muslims. They are: B FOUZIA TARANUM (rank 31), MUHAMMED ABDAAL AKHTAR (rank 35), MOHAMMAD ROSHAN (rank 44) and BASEER UL HAQ (rank 46).

It was for the first time that the final results were declared within four days of the closing date of the interviews.

Conducted by the UPSC annually in three stages -- preliminary, mains and interviews - the examination took place on August 24, 2014 at 2,137 venues at 59 centres across the country.

Of the 9.45 lakh candidates who applied, about 4.51 lakh were cleared to sit for the examination.

A total of 16,933 candidates qualified for the main examination which was held in December, 2014. A total of 1,364 posts have to be filled through the examination.

As compared to the previous results, total number of Muslims passing the Civil Services Exam has improved.

In 2014 a total of 34 Muslims had cleared the exam, whereas in 2013, 30 Muslims were among the successful candidates, four of them were among top 100.

The performance of successful Muslim candidates is almost same in numbers if compared with the results of last few years. In 2009, a total of 31 Muslims were in the list of 791 successful candidates. Though percentage wise it shows a marginal decline.

Likewise, in 2010 among the 875 successful candidates 21 were Muslims with Dr. Shah Faisal of Kashmir topping the exam at the national level.

Similarly in 2011, 31 Muslims were among the 920 successful candidates whereas in 2012 too 30 Muslims were selected for the civil services.

Result of one candidate has been withheld.
