Ahmedabad:
At receiving end from friends and foes alike after the humiliating defeat in Bihar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's henchman Amit Shah is learnt to have been bargaining for the post of Gujarat Chief Minister to quit as the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) president.

According to the highly placed sources in the party, Amit Shah had discussed the issue on Friday during his meeting with RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat and other top RSS functionaries in Kutch, Gujarat where the organisation is holding a workshop for pracharaks.

Shah spent about one hour with Mohan Bhagwat and Bhaiyyaji Joshi at the workshop.

Sources said, the BJP's chances of winning the local bodies elections scheduled to be held later this month are poor, especially after the 'revolt' by the Patel community against the party over the quota row.

A defeat for the BJP in the local bodies election in Gujarat, a BJP stronghold, sources said, will surely be treated as the personal defeat for Anandiben Patel, who became Chief Minister in Gujarat after Modi shifted to New Delhi.

Amit Shah, who is not on good terms with Patel, is trying to use the situation for a respectable exit from the post of party president, sources said.

Knives are out against Amit Shah, who led the party to historic victory in the 2014 Lok Sabha, but failed in repeating the same first in Delhi and later in Bihar. In fact, the voices of dissent murmured after the Delhi debacle, became louder after Bihar election results declared last week.

Shah was further embarrassed when party veterans including L.K Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and Yashwant Sinha publicly sought 'answer' from the party leadership over party's defeat in Bihar.

The RSS meanwhile did not elaborate on what transpired between Amit Shah and Mohan Bhagwat during the meeting, terming it a “routine meeting.”

“Amitbhai paid a visit to meet Mohan Bhagwant and others at the workshop where 270 pracharaks from across the country are present,” said RSS Gujarat spokesperson Pradip Jain.

“Since Amitbhai was here in Gujarat with his family for Diwali and New Year, he went to Kutch to seek blessings of RSS leaders who are also present in Kutch,” a top aide of Shah said.
