Aligarh: The Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Lt. Gen. Zameeruddin Shah refuted the charge that anti-national debates are organized in the University, saying there has always been criticism of various political parties and government policies in the campus which should not be viewed as being anti national.

He emphasized that as a proud army man who served his country for more than 40 years, he is well aware of his responsibilities and he would not tolerate or allow any anti-national activities.

Reassuring the Member of Parliament, Satish Gautam that AMU respects the Government of the day, he reiterated that “AMU is an autonomous institution and there is no prohibition on discussion on any topic within the framework of the constitution".

"We have several fora for debate, where divergent views are expressed freely and different shades of opinion are respected. There has always been criticism of various political parties and government policies. This should not be viewed as being anti nationa", he added.

The Vice Chancellor also said that “We have our differences on the ‘Minority Status’ issue but we are trying to bridge the gap and are trying to explain our stand which we hope the government will accept. AMU has always espoused nationalism and pluralism.”

The Vice Chancellor also hoped that as people’s representative and a member of the University Court, it would be better if Gautam discusses any AMU related matter with him before making it public.

It may be added that Gautam’s letter was in public domain before it was received in the Vice Chancellor’s office.
