Monday July 4, 2016 9:57 AM, Agencies

A suspected suicide bomber was killed on Monday after blowing himself up near the US consulate in Saudi Arabia's Jeddah city, officials said.

Two security officers were injured "as a result of the failed bombing", Al Jazeera reported.

"The suicide bomber only managed to kill himself as he attempted to attacked the heavily protected consulate", Arab New reported.

Local media reports said the attacker parked his car outside a mosque opposite the consulate and shortly afterwards detonated his device after being tackled by security guards.

Security officials cordoned off the area around the consulate, which is surrounded by Falastine, Al-Andalous, Al-Hamra and Hail roads.

The Jeddah consulate was the scene of a militant attack in 2004, which left nine people dead. The area is fairly busy as it’s near one of Jeddah’s biggest hospitals.
