Nashik: Nagpur Municipal Corporation and Nashik Municipal Corporation, where elections to elect new body were held on February 21, will respectively have 07 and 06 Muslim corporators, according to the final results announced by the State Election Commission.
Majority of the members in Nagpur Municipal Corporation and Nashik Municipal Corporation are from the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).
Out of the total 07 Muslims who have won the February 21 elections in Nagpur counting of votes for which were held on February 23, four are from the Congress, two from Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) and one from the BJP.
The 04 Muslims who have won the Nagpur civic elections on Congress ticket are Aisha Ansari, Ansari Syyeda Begum, Zishan Mumtaz and Zulfiqar Ahmed. All the 04 candidates have won the election from Ward no. 8 in Mominpura area of Nagpur.
The Muslims who have won the Nagpur local body elections on BSP ticket are Mohammad Ibrahim (Ward no. 6) and Mohammad Jamal (Ward no. 7).
Naseema Bano of the BJP is another Muslim who has won the Nagpur elections. She has won the polls from Wardno. 03.
The All India Majlis-e-Itttehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) of Asaduddin Owaisi had fielded 19 candidates, but none of them could win the polls.
In Nashik, out of the total 06 Muslim corporators 02 are from the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP). They are Mirza Shaheen Salim Baig ((Prabhag no 23) and Tadvi Asha Rafik of BJP (Prabhag no 16 B).
The other Muslims who have won the Nashik Municipal Corporation elections held on February 21 are Shaikh Salim of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (Prabhag no 11), Memon Samina Shoeb (Prabhag no 14B), Syed Mushir Muniruddin (Prabhag no 14 C) and Jeen Sufiyan Ibrahim (Prabhag no 14 D).
In 2012 also, Nashik Municipal Corporation had a total of 06 Muslim corporators.
The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the single largest party in the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) bagging 55 seats of the total 122 - one short of the simple majority needed to have its own Mayor and members on other key posts.
The Shiv Sena, which had a sour relations with its former ally BJP, won 35 seats. The Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) respectively won 06 and 05 seats.
On the other hand, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) of Raj Thackeray, which was ruling the Nashik civic body after winning the 2012 elections, could not win more than 03 seats. The party had 40 members in the last body.
In Nagpur, the ruling BJP bagged a total of 91seats and retained 151-member Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) also known as Nagpur Mahanagar Palika. The Congress won 23 seats and the NCP won 01 seat.
