New Dlehi: In yet another example to show how the present government under the leadership of Narendra Modi is working for corporate families, the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development (HRD) listed Jio Institute among the 06 top notch institutions of India shortlisted as 'Institutions of Eminence'.
Ironically, Jio Institute has been shorlisted even as it is yet to be established. A project of Reliance Foundation of Mukesh Ambani, Jio Institute is proposed to be established in Navi Mumbai. Yet it found a place among the institutions like Indian Institute of Science (IIS) Bangalore, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi.
Soon after the ministry made public the list, it received a thumbs down by the people of the country and the political parties. Jio is trending on Twitter, with many tagging Education Minister Prakash Javadekar, asking him about the institute's location and credentials.
"The BJP Govt favours Mukesh & Nita Ambani yet again. The illusionary JIO Institute which is yet to see the light of day has been declared as an 'eminent' institute. The Govt needs to clarify the basis of classification for granting such a status. #SuitBo...", the Congress tweeted.
The UGC said the Jio Institute was selected under rules for greenfield institutions. According to officials, 11 such institutions had applied for the Institute of Eminence and Jio was selected from among them.

HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar hailed the decision as landmark and says it goes far beyond graded autonomy.
"It will ensure complete autonomy to the selected institutions and facilitate them to grow more rapidly. At the same time, they will get more opportunity to scale up their operations with more skills and quality improvement so that they become World Class Institutions in the field of education", Javadekar said
Earlier, the Government and the UGC had jointly approved the scheme of providing Regulatory Architecture for setting up upgrading of 20 Institutions (10 from public sector & 10 from private sector) as world class teaching and research institutions called as ‘Institutions of Eminence’. The Regulatory Architecture has been provided in the form of UGC (Declaration of Government Institutions as Institutions of Eminence) Guidelines, 2017 for public Institutions and UGC (Institutions of Eminence Deemed to be Universities) Regulations, 2017 for private Institutions.
"Under this scheme, 114 applications (74 from public sector and 40 from private sector) were received in the Ministry for selection of IoEs", the HRD Ministry said.
The government expects that the shortlisted Institutions will come up in top 500 of the world ranking in 10 years and in top 100 of the world ranking eventually overtime. To achieve the top world ranking, these Institutions will be provided with greater autonomy to admit foreign students up to 30% of the admitted students, to recruit foreign faculty upto 25% of the faculty strength, to offer online courses upto 20% of its programmes, to enter into academic collaboration with top 500 in the world ranking Institutions without permission of UGC, free to fix and charge fees from foreign students without restriction, flexibility of course structure in terms of number of credit hours and years to take a degree, complete flexibility in fixing of curriculum and syllabus among others.
