Nawaz Sharif arrested

Islamabad: Former Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam have been arrested on their arrival in the eastern city of Lahore. The Sharifs arrived in Lahore from London on Friday evening, submitting themselves for arrest after they were convicted by an anti-corruption court last week, TV footage showed.

Nawaz Sharif's arrest is a blow to his PML-N party, which is contesting the July 25 general election as the incumbent party, but alleges that it has been the victim of "political engineering" by its opponents during the campaign.

Lahore is on lockdown as PML-N supporters march under the leadership of Nawaz’s brother Shahbaz Sharif. The two were flown to Islamabad on a small chartered plane. They are expected to be transported to the central jail there.

The father-daughter duo was moved to Sihala Police Training College Rest House shortly after being moved to Islamabad from Lahore tonight, reported Dawn.

The rest house was declared as sub-jail for "keeping the convicted prisoner Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, ex-prime minister, and Ms. Mariam Nawaz, who have been arrested by NAB authorities, with immediate effect and till further orders," as per a notification issued by the Islamabad chief commissioner.

Sharif has been awarded a 10-year sentence by an anti-corruption court in connection with the Panama Papers investigation, while his daughter is facing a 7-year sentence.

Earlier, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), has said they will march to the airport in defiance of a ban on all public rallies. Over 300 leaders and workers were arrested on Thursday in a crackdown ahead of their arrival. At least 10,000 personnel are deployed across the city today.
