New Delhi: Amid the controversy over Governor Vajubhai Vala's invitation to BS Yeddyurappa to form government in Karnataka despite the fact that he did not have enough MLAs with him, Congress party on Friday staked claim to form its government in Goa, Manipur and Meghalaya.

Justifying it decision the Karnataka Governor said he invited Yeddyurappa as he was elected as the leader of the BJP which ermerged as the single largest paty after the recently held state election. Seeking adoption of the same example, Congress leaders in Goa, Manipur and Meghalaya met the governors in the respective stated and staked claims to form government.

Similarly in Bihar, where Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) is the single largest party, Tejashwi Yadav met Bihar Governor and staked claim to form government in the state. RJD formed an alliance government with JD (U) after the 2016 state election. JD (U) leader Nitish Kumar however broke the alliance and joined hands with the BJP to form BJP-JD (U) alliance government in Bihar.

The case of Goa, Manipur and Meghalaya is different. Congress emerged as the single largest party in these states after the elections. But, the BJP got the invitation from the governor in each state and hence it formed its governments in Goa, Manipur and Meghalaya with the help of regional parties and independent MLAs. The most interesting case is of Meghalaya where BJP has won jut 02 seats yet it claimed to form the government in the state.

The situation however took a dramatic turn on Thursday when Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala invited BS Yeddyurappa to form the government despit the fact that the BJP has only 104 MLAs - 08 short of the halfway mark. Soon after the results were out, Congress and Janata Dal (S) joined hands and with the support of 118 MLAs staked claim to form an alliance government in Karnatala. Karnataka Governor however turned their equest and instead invited Yeddyurappa.

“@INCGoa MLAs call upon HE Governor Mridula Sinha to stake claim to form the government on Goa", the Goa Congress said in a tweet.

“How can they have different yardsticks? If they have allowed the single-largest party to come to power in Karnataka, then they should allow that here as well. So we will meet her and tell her that,” Goa Congress president Girish Chodankar said.

Former Manipur Chief Minister and CLP leader Okram Ibobi Singh also met Manipur Acting Governor Jagdish Mukhi on Friday to stake claim to form the government.

In Bihar, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav also said that they will prove the majority to the Governor and stake claim in the assembly. “We are going to prove our majority to the Governor. We stake claim to form the government. We have the support of many parties and MLAs of those parties are with us. Let’s see what happens", he said.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of India on Friday asked Yeddyurappa to prove majority in the Karnataka Assembly on Saturday at 04 pm. Karnataka Governor had given him a time of 15 days to do so.
