Mumbai: Congress and its President Rahul Gandhi nowadays are keeping away from anything slightest of Muslims. But, they will not consider Maulana Abul Kalam Azad - one of its most prominent former presidents, deserving for even a mention on his birth anniversary is something which nobody would have expected.
Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, a front line leader of India's freedom struggle and the first Education Minister of Independent India, was born on November 11, 1888 in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. His birth anniversary is also celebrated as National Education Day.
Whole of India celebrated the 130th birth anniversary of this one of the greatest sons of India. President Kovind, Prime Minister Modi, several Chief Ministers and union ministers paid rich tributes to him. Such was the volume of messages posted on Twitter that #NationalEducationDay, #MaulanaAbulKalamAzad and #MaulanaAzad trended on the social media site for almost the whole day.
Besides President of India, Prime Ministers, several Chief Ministers and Union Ministers who paid tributes to Maulana Abul Kalam Azad were also leader like Sharad Yadav. Congress leaders Tariq Anwar, Ashok Ghelot, and Randeep Surjewala also paid tributes to Congress' youngest president, though in their personal capacity.
Messages paying tribute to Maulana Azad were also posted by All India Mahila Congress and also by Mumbai Congress.
However, the Indian National Congress Party and its President Rahul Gandhi chose to ignore the 130th birth anniversary of Maulana Azad. They did not find him find for customary message of two lines on their official Tiwtter handler.
It is not that the Congress or its President Rahul Gandhi do not post messages to pay tributes to departed and living leaders. They do it more than frequently. And, one can find a number of such messages on the Twitter timeline of Congress and Rahul Gandhi. More recently, messages posted on November 10, 2018 on the occasion of birth anniversary of Surendranath Banerjee and on November 09, 2019 on the occasion of death anniversary of Former President K. R. Narayanan.
The Congress party had in fact on November 07, 2018 posted four messages one after the another to honour C.V. Raman, Chidambaram Subramaniam, Jivraj Narayan Mehta and freedom fighters Bipin Chandra Pal.
Congress President Rahul Gandhi is also regular in posting such messages including the messages posted on October 02, 2018 on the birth annivsary of Mahatma Gandhi, on September 17, 2018 to wish birthday greeting to Prime Minister Modi and on August 20, 2018 on the occasion of the birth annivrsary of his father, former prime minister and ex president of Congress Rajiv Gandhi. Rahul also paid tributes to Aba Birsa Munda on June 09 - the day of his martyrdom.
There is a long list. However, Congress and its President Rahul Gandhi did not find it necessary to issue a two-line message to pay homage to Maulana Azad - the elegant, erudite statesman who towered next to [MK] Gandhi and [Jawaharlal] Nehru during the tumultuous days of the freedom struggle, leader of the Quit India movement and head of Congress delegations to crucial meetings during the turbulent period of 1940-45.
