Alappuzha (Kerala): Advocate Shanimol Osman, the Congress nominee from Alappuzha Parliamentary Constituency is the only Muslim woman fielded by the party in Kerala. A double graduate, Shanimol Osman also has a distinction of being the first woman from Kerala to become the Secretary of All India Congress Committee.
Alappuzha, one of the 20 Lok Sabha constituencies in Kerala, is comprised of 07 Assembly Seats of Kerala including Aroor, Cherthala, Alappuzha, Ambalappuzha, Haripad, Kayamkulam and Karunagappally.
Alappuzha Lok Sabha constituency is currently represented by K C Venugopal. Venugopal is senior leader of the Congress party. He has been appointed as AICC in charge of Karnataka.
Venugopal is representing Alappuzha Lok Sabha seat since 2009. He had defeated C B Chandrababu of CPI (M) by about 19000 votes in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
The Congress has nominated Shanimol Osman from here replacing Venugopal.
Shanimol Osman graduated in Zoology from SD College, Alappuzha, and is a post-graduate in Sociology from the Loyola College, Thiruvananthapuram. She later also completed LLB from the Kerala Law Academy, Thiruvananthapuram.
Shanimol Osman is pitted against AM Arif of CPI (M), KS Shan of SDPI and Dr K S Radhakrishnan of BJP.
AM Arif of CPI (M) is a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Aroor since 2006. Dr. Radhakrishnan is former chairman of the Kerala Public Service Commission and former VC of the Sree Shankaracharya University for Sanskrit in Kalady.
Polling in Alappuzha will be held on April 23, 2019 in the 3rd Phase of 2019 Lok Sabha Polls. Counting of votes will be held on May 23, 2019.
