Ghaziabad (Uttar Pradesh): Ghulam Nabi Azad, senior Congress leader and leader of the opposition in Rajya Sabha, exposed the hypocrisy of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) in fighting terrorism and also slammed the ruling party for using religion to gain political mileage.
"India is respected for its tolerant and inclusive culture. But here we have a party which uses religion to get votes. The day our Hindu brothers realise that they are being used, BJP will be finished", Azad said while addressing an election rally in Morad Nagar near Ghaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh.
"It is the BJP way to contest elections by dividing Hindus and Muslims. Congress does not believe in such communal politics" he said adding it's "Bharat" that loses because of such politics.
"I don't want to be recognised as a leader of particular religion or community. Being a Muslim, I would always like to win with the help of Hindu votes. Similarly, Hindu candidates should win with Muslim votes", he said adding that one should not mix religion with politics.
"How will I care for the people from other faiths if I win on Muslim votes?" he asked.
Calling the ruling party's double standard in fighting terrorism, Azad said it was the BJP government that had released Masood Azhar and it was its leaders who escorted him to Afghanistan.
Azad also said that not a single leader of the BJP has sacrificed their lives for the nation, while the Congress has a long list of such leaders who happily gave their lives for the country.
Taking on the BJP, he said 4 crore 41 lakh industrial units have suffered losses due to ill implementation of the GST and their owners had to shut them down.
"BJP government is anti-farmer due to which cultivators are not getting actual price of their crops. Diesel and petrol prices have been increased and as a result cost of everything has gone up," Azad said.
"Modi's promise of providing two crore jobs was like painting a rosy picture, the consequences of which the youths are facing today," he added.
