Patna: Hundreds of people Saturday hit streets against Modi government in response to a shutdown call given by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) of Lalu Prasad Yadav against Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC).
RJD alliance partner Congress has also supported the Bihar bandh call. However, making the situation worse for the BJP, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar-led Janata Dal (United) which had voted for the controversial law, too has extended its support to the protest.
But, people of Bihar are not impressed by the JD(U) support for today's shutdown.
"Nitish Kumar had pledged that he would never join hands with the BJP. But, the fact is that he is now ruling the state with the same party. So, how can we trust him when he says NRC will not be implemented in ths state?", a protester said.
"He is paltu kumar and can't be trusted", he added.
In what is seen as a move to expose the attempts by the ruling dispensation to give a communal colour to the anti CAA and anti-NRC protest, Leader of Opposition in Bihar Assembly Tejashwi Yadav said "he is a Hindu yet oppose the act".
"I am Hindu. I am Indian. I am against #CAA_NRC. #BiharBand", Yadav wrote on Twitter.
A RJD leader also accused the Bihar Chief Minister of fooling the people of the state on the issue.
"Once a law is framed and enacted by Central Government, governments in state will not have any power to oppose it. They are bound to implement it in the respective states", he said.
"It is just another attempt by Nitish Kumar to fool the people of Bihar", he said.
He wasresponding to the statement by Nitish Kumar in which he said his government will not implement NRC even if it is passed by the Centre.
"There could be opposition on political ground. But, constitutionally a state government is bound to go by the law enacted by the Center. This is why we are protesting today against the CAA and NRC", the RJD leader said.
Reports of protests against CAA and NRC started pouring in since morning today. The strong protests against the two are being reported from Patna, Bhagalpur, Araria, Aara, Samastipur, Vaishali and Sitamarhi where protesters blocked road and train traffic. Incidents of arson were also reported at many places. Other partners of the RJD-Congress grand alliance -- Rashtriya Lok Samta Party, Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) and Hindustani Awam Morcha -- also joined the protest. Members of the VIP and other parties reached at Rajendra Nagar Terminal in Patna and blocked railway tracks. The protesters also jammed the National Highway-2 in Aurangabad that lead to snarls of vehicles.
