New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday asked the Delhi Police to lodge an FIR against a self-proclaimed cyber expert for his claims that the 2014 Lok Sabha polls were rigged and the EVMs can be hacked.
In its letter, the ECI said Syed Shuja has allegedly violated section 505 (1) of the IPC pertaining to spreading rumours which creates panic, PTI reported.
The EC asked the police to "investigate promptly" the statement made by Shuja yesterday at an event in London that the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) can be tampered with and that the 2014 Lok Sabha elections were rigged.
Syed Shuja, who claims to be a Cyber Expert based in the United States, said he was part of the team that designed the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) used in India. He also claimed that senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde was murdered because he knew the entire hacking game plan.
While addressing a press conference in London via Skype Monday, Syed Shuja also claimed that Tanzil Ahmed, the NIA officer investigating Munde's death, was planning to file an FIR noting he had been murdered, but was himself killed.
Shuja said that he fled India and sought asylum in the US because he felt threatened here. Shuja said he sought political asylum in the US when asked about the circumstances of him leaving India.
Syed Shuja also demonstrated how the EVMs were hacked during the press meet organised by Indian Journalists Association (Europe) in association with Foreign Press Association, London.
