Mumbai: A foot over bridge near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), formerly known as VT Railway Station, has collapsed during the rush hours Thursday late in the afternoon.

The foot over bridge on Mumbai Municipal Corporation side collapsed about 07:45 pm today. At least six persons are reported to have died and a number of others are feared to have been injured, eyewitnesses said talking to ummid.com.

The bridge near VT Station, just a stone throw away from Anjuman e Islam Campus, collapsed at the time when a large number of people reach the railway station to catch trains back home after day's work.

According to reports, two of those killed in the tragic incident are GT Hospital nurses. They had completed their second shift and were returning home.

At least 12 people are still trapped under the debris. An NDRF team from Regional Response Centre (RRC) is at the site conducting search and rescue operations.

Mumbai police has cordoned off the entire area. Fire tenders have been called and rescue operation is underway. Mumbai Police has also tweeted in this regard and has advised commuters to use alternate routes.

"Foot over bridge connecting CST platform 1 North end with B T Lane near Times of India building has collapsed. Injured persons are being shifted to hospitals. Traffic affected. Commuters are requested to use alternate routes. Senior officers are on spot," read the tweet by Mumbai police.

Maharashtra minister Vinod Tawade said that the Railways and BMC will conduct an inquiry into the incident. According to some reports, the bridge collapsed even though it was marked "fit to use" only six months ago after an audit.

“A slab of the bridge had collapsed. Railways and BMC will conduct an inquiry into its maintenance. The bridge wasn’t in a bad condition, it required minor repairs for which work was underway. Why was it not closed until the work was completed, it’ll also be probed", he said.

The Maharashtra government has announced a compensation of Rs 05 lakh each to the kin of the deceased.
