New Delhi: Days after supporting the Modi government for its decision to abrogate Article 370 in Kashmir, Jamiat Ulema Hind, the largest representative body of Indian Muslims, Sunday slammed Union Home Minister Amit Shah over his October 1 speech in Kolkata.
Calling Amit Shah's speech "irresponsible" and a direct targeting of Indian Muslims, the Jamiat also said that the "attitude" of Home Minister will incite hatred and promote enmity among different section of the society in India.
"Amit Shah's statement was against the basic equal and fundamental rights guaranteed in the Constitution of India", General Secretary of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind (JUH), Mahmood Madani said.
"It does not augur well for the Home Minister of India to give such an irresponsible statement as any distinction on the basis of religion contradicts the Articles 14-15 of the Indian constitution and against the internationally recognised UN declarations", Mahmood Madani said.
While addressing a public meeting in Kolkata on October 01, Amit Shah asserted that all Hindu refugees, as also Sikhs, Christians, Jains and Buddhists, will be given permanent citizenship by passing the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) before undertaking any National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise.
"I want to assure the people of Bengal publicly that not a single refugee -- Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and Christians, especially the Hindus as they are a big majority among them -- will be forced by the government of India to leave the country," said Amit Shah.
Slamming the staments made by Amit Shah, Mahmood Madani said, "It seems that only Muslims will be kept in detention camps in Assam. If it happens, then it will bring bad name for the nation at the international level, and will also give a tool in the hands of the inimical forces bent upon tarnishing the image of the country."
Mahmood Madani while pointing out the distinction between refugees and intruders said that if the government was really moved by the plight of persecuted minorities in India’s neighbourhood, it should take in the Rohingyas from Myanmar without discriminating against on the basis of religion.
"If the government is really worried about “intruders” or “infiltration”, then no intruders should be allowed in India at any cost", he said.
While asserting that there is no issue if NRC is implemented across India, Mahmood Madani said, "But, it appears from the tone and tenor of the Home Minister that he is targeting Muslims."
"Such an attitude will generate hatred and promote enmity among different section of the India society and raise suspicion about the Muslims", Mahmood Madani said.
