Sydney: India slipped 04 places while its arch rival Pakistan slipped 02 points on the annual global index on peacefulness whereas Iceland continues to be the most peaceful nation consecutively for the 7th term.
The Global Peace Index (GPI) 2019 was released on the occasion of the International Day of Peace on September 21. It's also known as World Peace Day.
The Global Peace Index (GPI) 2019 shows India at 141st place as against 137 in 2018. Pakistan is placed on 153rd position as against 151 in 2018.
Interestingly, Bangladesh, much smaller and younger than the two neigbours, has been placed at 101th position. The country had the rank of 92 in 2018 Global Peace Index.
In its annual report, the Institute for Economics and Peace presented a comprehensive data-driven analysis on peace, economic value, trends and how to develop peaceful societies.
The Sydney-based think-tank said the global peacefulness improved slightly in 2019. But overall peacefulness has deteriorated 3.78 per cent since 2008.
While Iceland continues to top the Global Peace Index (GPI) as the world's most peaceful place followed by New Zealand, Portugal and Austria, Afghanistan has replaced Syria as the most violent place.
The rank of Saudi Arabia in Global Peace Index 2019 is 129, of United Arab Emirates (UAE) is at 53, Qatar 31, Kuwait 43, Oman 69, Egypt 136, Turkey 152 and Bahrain 124.
The ranks of United States is 128 and that of Russia and Iran is respectively 154 and 139.
India, together with the Philippines, Japan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, China, Indonesia, Vietnam and Pakistan are also among the nine countries with the highest climate hazard risk.
India also has the seventh-highest overall natural hazard score in the world.
