The British Geological Survey has warned that our Earth could be hit by a Geomagnetic Storm capable of disturbing Earth's magnetosphere and producing spectacular aurora displays at high latitudes on Monday, August 17, 2026.

The unstable geomagnetic background will persist on Sunday August 16, 2026. However, space experts predict the most significant impact in the second half of Monday, August 17, 2026, this is when the main volumes of solar material are expected to approach Earth.

About Geomagnetic Storm

A geomagnetic storm is a major disturbance of Earth's magnetosphere that occurs when there is a very efficient exchange of energy from the solar wind into the space environment surrounding Earth, according to Space Weather Prediction Center, USA.

The Center says these storms result from variations in the solar wind that produces major changes in the currents, plasmas, and fields in Earth’s magnetosphere.

The solar wind conditions that are effective for creating geomagnetic storms are sustained (for several to many hours) periods of high-speed solar wind, and most importantly, a southward directed solar wind magnetic field (opposite the direction of Earth’s field) at the dayside of the magnetosphere.

This condition is effective for transferring energy from the solar wind into Earth’s magnetosphere, the Center says.

Double Hit from Sun

On Monday, our Earth is likely to meet with a prolonged period of geomagnetic activity. The cause will be a double coronal mass ejection from the Sun towards our planet, which, combined with a high-speed solar wind stream, can trigger magnetic storms of G1 and G2 levels.

The first disturbances are already beginning, with the most significant impact in the second half of August 17. A high-speed plasma stream will reach the Earth's atmosphere and is expected to provoke a moderate G1 category storm, the British Geological Survey said in a statement.

During such geomagnetic disturbances, people sensitive to weather changes, as well as patients with cardiovascular diseases, are advised to reduce physical and emotional stress. Doctors also recommend maintaining hydration, avoiding alcohol, and not overindulging in caffeine.

The Sun has remained unusually active in recent months, producing multiple filament eruptions, solar flares and Earth-directed CMEs. Scientists are closely monitoring solar activity as the star moves through an active phase of its roughly 11-year cycle.
