Makkah al Mukarramah: In a major development in the Middle East which could also impact world geopolitics, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan Friday August 07, 2026 signed a joint defence deal in the Holy City of Makkah al Mukarramah.
The deal was signed between Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Saudi Arabia.
The deal brings together oil-rich Saudi Arabia, nuclear-powered Pakistan and Turkey, which has NATO's second-largest army and a rapidly growing defence industry.
"The Agreement is intended to strengthen collective deterrence against any act of aggression, and stipulates that any armed attack against any one of the three States shall be regarded as an attack against them all. It further provides for the enhancement of all aspects of defence cooperation among the three States", Pakistan's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
The agreement covers the development of all aspects of defense cooperation between Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and Pakistan.
The Kingdom meanwhile clarified that the deal is not intended to establish a military alliance or sectarian bloc or lead arms race in the region.
"Under the deal, an external armed attack on any one of the three signatories would be treated as an attack on all of them. The agreement is not intended to establish a military alliance or sectarian bloc, and is not linked to any nuclear ambitions or regional arms race", Saudi Deputy Minister for Public Diplomacy Rayed Krimly said.

Makkah Al-Mukarramah Summit for Joint Defence
At the gracious invitation of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the President of the Republic of Türkiye, H.E. Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and the Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, H.E. Mr. Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, paid a visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, on 24 Safar 1448H, corresponding to August 7, 2026.
His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister received H.E. the President of Türkiye, and H.E. the Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, at Al-Safa Palace in Makkah, where the Makkah Al-Mukarramah Summit for Joint Defence was held, during which the distinguished relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Republic of Türkiye and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan were reviewed, along with a number of issues of mutual interest.
Guided by the longstanding historical ties among the three States, based on the enduring bonds of brotherhood and Islamic solidarity that unite them, and building upon their shared strategic interests and longstanding defence cooperation, His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia, H.E. Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of the Republic of Türkiye, and H.E. Mr. Muhammed Shehbaz Sharif, Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, reflecting the three States' shared commitment to further strengthening their collective security and to promoting peace, security, and stability in the region and beyond, in pursuit of a secure and prosperous future.

Significance of the Deal
The official Saudi Press Agency highlighting the importance of the deal reported, the Makkah Summit for Joint Defence was held on the basis of the three countries’ historic ties, Islamic solidarity, shared strategic interests and close defense cooperation.
“The agreement reflects the three nations’ commitment to bolstering their collective security and promoting peace, security and stability in the region and the wider world”, SPA reported.
The choice of Makkah al Mukarramah as the place to sign the Mecca Defence Deal is also significant. Also significant is the three leaders seen offering Friday prayers at Masjid al Haram in Makkah al Mukarramah.
The Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan Joint Defence Deal came around a year after Saudi Arabia and Pakistan signed a defence deal, Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement (SMDA), between the two countries on September 17, 2025.
