Mumbai: The Maharashtra government on Monday appointed Sayyed Hussain, a judge of Mumbai sessions court, as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Wakf Board making the state as the first to appoint a sitting judge for the high profile post.
"Judge Sayyed Hussain's appointment is significant because for the first time a person from the judiciary has been appointed to the post," Minister for Minorities Development and Wakf Arif Naseem Khan said.
Earlier, the law and judiciary department of the state had sent a request to the registrar (establishment) of the Bombay HC, seeking appointment of Muslim magistrate/judge as Waqf board CEO. Consequently, the registrar provided a list of Muslim magistrate and judges. The state government then finalised the name of Hussain for the post..
"He has a clean record and is known for fast disposal of cases. We had requested for a Muslim judicial officer since as per the Waqf Act provisions, the post has to be occupied by a Muslim," said Arif Naseem Khan.
In July this year, the Anti Corruption Bureau had arrested Maharashtra Wakf Board Chief Executive Offficer (CEO) N.D. Pathan while he was taking bribe in cash at his residence in Naded.
Pathan was caught red-handed after a complaint against him was filed by one Shaikh Kareem, a resident of Nanded city. Kareem had taken an agricultural land on lease for the board.
