Caste in census: Additional expenditure of Rs 4,000 cr

Friday, August 20, 2010 11:11:30 PM, PTI

New Delhi: The Government will have to spend an additional Rs 4,000 crore following the decision to include caste in the census exercise across the country.

Official sources said the fund will be spent in purchasing and printing paper for enumeration of 1.2 billion population of the country, providing logistical support to the 24 lakh enumerators and on their remuneration.

A special budgetary provision will have to be made to arrange the funds for the exercise which is likely to be conducted by the year-end.

Decks were cleared for inclusion of caste in the census on August 11 with a Group of Ministers approving the exercise to be undertaken from biometric stage, capping months of uncertainty over the issue that had divided many parties.
