Chennai: The death toll in a boat accident off the Periapattinam village coast in Tamil Nadu's Ramanathapuram district has risen to 15 with the search and rescue team fishing out two more bodies Monday.

The dead in the accident Sunday include 10 women and five children.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi Monday announced compensation of Rs.100,000 each for the families of the dead.

According to officials, the bodies to two young girls were recovered from the sea Monday.

On Sunday, 13 bodies were recovered from the sea after the boat in which the vicitms were traveling to a nearby island capsized in the sea.

"The accident took place around 8.30 a.m Sunday. The private boat left the shore around 7.30 a.m. It carried around 30 persons and was overloaded," a police officer told IANS.

The occupants were mostly Non-Resident Indians living in the Gulf.

According to police, more than 50 people took two boats to a nearby island. While the women and children were in the boat that capsized, the men were in the other boat.
