Govt. should stop playing game with Muslims, says Maulana Wali Rahmani

Coimbatore: Religion is becoming an "obstacle" for deserving poor students of the Hindu community to get scholarship to pursue their studies, BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitaraman said today.

The Government should provide scholarship on economic and merit criteria so that poor students of all sections of the society get benefitted, she said.

Nirmala said though the government claimed it was secular, it was providing scholarships only to Muslim and Christian students.

Stating that the party would raise this issue in Parliament, Nirmala said it would also be taken up during Assembly and Lok Sabha elections, mainly to create awareness among the people about the "bias and partiality shown by the so called secular government."

She was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a demonstration organised by the BJP against the Centre's policy in providing "scholarship to minority communities while neglecting poorer sections of majority community.

'Irregularities in scholarship distribution'

Interestingly, despite big claims by the government vis-à-vis various scholarships, large scale irregularities and complaints in the distribution are being claimed ever since the government has come out with the schemes. Many complainants allege that the scholarships are either sanctioned very late or if sanctioned, the money does not come in their account.

"I had applied for the post-metric scholarship but even after getting the sanction, I have not received any money so far", said a student on the condition of anonymity.

Recently, a Muslim students' organization had also protested in Mumbai against the delay. The Organisation had alleged many students are facing loss of a year because of non-receipt of the sanctioned scholarships.
