Right to dissent curbed in Gujarat: PUCL

Tuesday, May 11, 2010 03:44:49 PM, UNI

Ahmedabad: Several civil rights activists have deplored the alleged attempts by the Narendra Modi-led BJP government in Gujarat to curb expression of dissent in a democratic manner.

What angered the activists of Gujarat Lok Andolan and PUCL was withdrawal of permission at the last moment to hold dharna at the Town Hall in Paldi area here yesterday to protest deterioration of law and order in the state.

According to PUCL General Secretary Gautam Thaker, the PUCL had asked the Police Commissioner to give a convincing explanation for withdrawing the permission to hold dharna and warned that they would be constrained to explore other methods of expressing their resentment in a democratic and peaceful manner.

Leading civil rights activists Prakash N Shah, Dwarikanath Rath, Damayantiben Parekh, Narpatsingh Chavda, Rajni Dave, Ila Pathak, Meenakshi Joshi and Budhidhan Trivedi, who had gathered to support the dharna, said ''It was thoroughly deplorable that the space to democratically express dissent is being lost.''
