Cairo:
Egyptians began voting on Sunday for a new lower house of
parliament, amid concerns by rights groups of voter intimidation
and a clampdown on the media.
Polling stations in most of the country opened at 8 am and were
expected to close at 5 pm. Some 42 million people are eligible to
vote for the 5,100 candidates vying for the 508 seats in the
People’s Assembly. Ten additional seats are appointed by the
president.
In the last election, held in 2005, voter turnout was a reported
22 per cent.
President Hosni Mubarak’s ruling National Democratic Party is
expected to maintain a majority in parliament.
The Muslim Brotherhood, whose
members run as “independents” since the group is officially
outlawed, currently holds 20 per cent of the seats as the largest
opposition bloc. It has said 1,300 of its members have been
arrested in recent weeks. Observers say the Brotherhood may lose
seats in this election.
Once a new parliament is in place, Mubarak has called for the
first legislative session to be held on December 13. The president
himself is up for re-election next year.
