New Delhi:
An NGO Monday demanded stern action against doctors involved in
the alleged surgical sex change of girls in Madhya Pradesh's
Indore city.
"Stringent actions have to be taken by the authority like Medical
Council of India (MCI) to keep a check on professionals doing such
dehumanising act. A proper guideline to remove this practice of genitoplasty or sex change is urgently required," Swadeep
Srivastava of the HEAL foundation, a health awareness and advocacy
group, said in a letter to the health ministry.
"Our country is already witnessing skewed sex ratio and such
malpractices can significantly distress the situation," Srivastava
added.
According to media reports, every year hospitals in Indore perform
hundreds of such operations on baby girls.
Genitoplasty is performed on children who are just five years old.
The procedure costs about Rs.1.5 lakh.
