Karachi: A Saudi
diplomat was killed in Pakistan Monday when unidentified gunmen
attacked his vehicle in Karachi city, Xinhua reported.
The unidentified gunmen shot dead the Saudi envoy in an apparent
move to avenge the killing of Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden in
Abbottabad early this month, police and the Saudi consulate said.
Hassan al Kahatani, head of the security section in the Saudi
consulate, was driving his car when four gunmen on motorcycles
fired at him, said a police officer, adding that the diplomat's
car was ambushed on Khayaban-e-Shahbaz road.
"The victim received one bullet in his head and died on the spot,"
said a senior police officer.
The slain Saudi diplomat was leaving a hotel in the Defence area
of the city and heading to work when he came under attack, said
police officer Iqbal Mehmood.
Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, in Islamabad, strongly
condemned the attack on the Saudi diplomat.
Gilani expressed deep grief and sorrow over the tragic death of
the Saudi diplomat in Karachi, the prime minister's office said.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, the second on
the Saudi diplomatic mission in less than a week.
On May 11, three people were injured when unidentified people
threw hand grenades at the Saudi consulate in Karachi.
Police said the authorities had increased security for the Saudi
consulate after last week's grenade attack. A plan was also in
place to provide security to diplomats at their residences.
