Over 19 lakh teachers' posts created in
literacy programme

New Delhi: Over 19 lakh posts of teachers have been created since the inception of
Sarva Shiksha Abiyan (SSA) in 2001-02, the Rajya Sabha was
informed Friday.
In reply to a question, Minister of State for Human Resource
Development D. Purandeshwari also said that pupil-teacher ratio (PTR)
at national level has shown improvement.
"The PTR at national level has improved from 36 at elementary
level in 2005-06 to 33 and 31 at primary and upper primary level
respectively," the minister said quoting data of 2009-10.
According to the right to education act (RTE), the PTR should be
one teacher per 35 children.
