New Delhi: Over 19 lakh posts of teachers have been created since the inception of Sarva Shiksha Abiyan (SSA) in 2001-02, the Rajya Sabha was informed Friday.

In reply to a question, Minister of State for Human Resource Development D. Purandeshwari also said that pupil-teacher ratio (PTR) at national level has shown improvement.

"The PTR at national level has improved from 36 at elementary level in 2005-06 to 33 and 31 at primary and upper primary level respectively," the minister said quoting data of 2009-10.

According to the right to education act (RTE), the PTR should be one teacher per 35 children.
