New Delhi:
The National Human Rights Commission has issued notice to the
Chhattisgarh government after taking cognizance of media reports
alleging that one person died and 25 others became victims of
botched eye surgery at a government organised health camp in Durg.
The camp was organised between Sep 21 and 31 and 334 patients were
operated upon. The operations were conducted as part of the
National Blindness Control Programme.
Allegedly, the patients, mostly farmers, caught infection due to
lapses in surgical procedure and lack of proper fumigation in the
makeshift operation theatre.
The commission has asked for a report from the state government
with specific information in the matter within four weeks.
The commission has also asked for the health status of each
patient and the medical aid provided.
